Project Overview
Description
HBM served as the Phase II structural engineering provider for the reconstruction of key infrastructure elements along the I-80 corridor at the Des Plaines River Bridge and the Chicago Street and Center Street interchanges in Joliet. Working under prime consultant WSP, HBM developed contract plans, specifications, and estimates (PS&E) for the proposed improvements, served as Designer of Record for the new Center Street Bridge over I-80 (SN 099-8332) and five retaining walls, and led the U.S. Coast Guard bridge permit application for the Des Plaines River crossing.
HBM's Scope
Scope of Work
- Structural design of the two-span continuous Center Street Bridge over I-80 (SN 099-8332) — an 8-inch reinforced concrete deck on 44-inch web steel plate girders, with an estimated construction cost of approximately $9 million
- Design of five retaining walls along I-80, the ramps, and Center Street — including a 934-foot drilled soldier pile wall and MSE walls with heights up to 22'-1"
- U.S. Coast Guard bridge permit application for the Des Plaines River Bridge replacement, including bridge location and vicinity maps, plan and profile clearance exhibits, and coordination through approval
- Type, Size, and Location (TSL) plans, final plans, specifications, and estimates (PS&E)
- Structural analysis and design using OpenBridge Designer 3D modeling, MIDAS, and MDX
- Quantity calculations, shop drawing reviews, Phase III construction support, and QA/QC
Highlights
Project Highlights
- Curved west fascia girder paired with straight interior girders to resolve the bridge's complex south-end geometry
- Deck elevations engineered through a superelevation transition zone, verified with a full 3D OpenBridge Designer model
- Long spans designed with 44-inch-deep girders to preserve vertical clearance over I-80 while maintaining the roadway profile
